2024 Cattaraugus County Envirothon

Hinsdale Team #1 braved the elements to take the top spot at the Cattaraugus County Envirothon hosted by Cattaraugus County Soil & Water Conservation District (CCSWCD).  Coming in second and third were Allegany-Limestone and Ellicottville Central, respectively.  Hinsdale Team #1 narrowly took first out of the nine teams to compete from seven different local school districts including: Allegany-Limestone, Cattaraugus-Little Valley, Ellicottville, Franklinville, Hinsdale, Olean, and Randolph.

Approximately fifty high school students grades 9-12 arrived at Camp Allegany located in the Red House Area of Allegany State Park the morning of April 24th to put their knowledge of conservation and environmental science to the test.  Students traveled to five different testing stations throughout the course of the day manned by numerous judges and volunteers from various Federal, State, County, and local government agencies along with several volunteers from private industries. Four of the stations, Aquatics, Soils, Forestry, and Wildlife, require the students to work together and be interactive with the environment around them at the Park to be able to answer the questions.  The Fifth station is a Current Issue presentation to a panel of judges where they are given a prompt by the New York State Envirothon Committee and must configure a plan to remedy the issue.  This year’s current issue prompt was “Renewable Energy for a Sustainable Future”.
